Plumber Cessnock

Cessnock sits beside Aberdare, and Aberdare Plumbing Co is the plumber covering it on the same run, where rusted galvanised water pipe and cracked clay sewers lie under the older blocks near the town centre. What the Coal Boom Left Under Town

Built in a hurry, 1903 to 1923

Cessnock's big growth spurt came in those two decades, so the middle of town holds federation homes and weatherboard and fibro miners' cottages, ringed by large areas of 1950s to 1970s housing and newer infill toward the edges. Census figures count 16,300 residents, and 84.1% of dwellings are separate houses, with the Vincent Street retail strip at the centre.

Old pipe in moving clay

Blocks around the centre still carry original galvanised water services, which rust narrow and cut pressure. The first sewers were earthenware, and decades of reactive clay movement have cracked them one joint at a time, while trees planted along the streets in the town's first decades push roots into the gaps after dry weather.

Storms from the ranges

When summer storms roll off the Brokenback Range they can dump heavy rain on the town, and older drains in low-lying streets back up while the creek flats take nuisance flooding in a big one. Rainfall averages 761 millimetres a year, with 8.2 frost days.

Four Services, Four Local Causes

Plumber collecting gear from the ute toolbox

Emergency plumber

Old steel water services under the older blocks can split without warning, and that can't wait for morning.

Plumber feeding a drain camera into a pit at a commercial unit

Blocked drains

Interwar clay sewer, root-filled joints, and grease from food shops on the main street, cleared and then filmed.

Plumber finishing a continuous-flow gas hot water install

Hot water

The 1950s to 1970s homes carry plenty of ageing storage cylinders tucked into outdoor recesses built with the house, repaired or replaced when they give out.

Gas fitter checking an oven connection

Gas fitting

Older gas connections around the shops and in older homes nearby may carry fittings that won't pass a modern pressure test, so each line is tested before a new appliance goes on.

When We're Not the Right Call

Water spreading across the creek flats in a major storm is a drainage matter for the council, not a blocked pipe on your block. A leak at the gas meter itself goes to the gas network's emergency line.

Questions Cessnock Callers Ask

Is there a call-out fee for a Cessnock visit?

It costs nothing to get us out to your door (excluding after-hours). Night and weekend visits carry a loading that's given on the phone, and the fixed price is agreed before any work starts.

Do the old sewers here have to be dug up?

Not necessarily. The line is filmed first, and if the clay still holds its shape a liner can seal the cracks from inside. Digging is kept for lengths that have collapsed, which interwar earthenware under older parts of town can do.
