Is It One Slow Sink or the Line?

A single sluggish basin is a trap or waste problem. When fixtures start misbehaving together, the line beneath them is the suspect. Watch for:

  • The shower or laundry floor flooding when the washing machine pumps out
  • A toilet that gurgles as a basin or bath drains
  • Sewer smell hanging around an outside gully or inspection point
  • Two or more fixtures on one side of the house slowing at the same time

In the older part of the suburb, where the sewers are clay laid close to a century back, a drain that clears and then half-blocks again points to a damaged pipe, and the camera will show where.

What Goes Wrong Under the Old Village?

Clay pipe from the colliery years

The first sewers under the original grid, including those near Cessnock Street and Rawson Street, are glazed clay. The mortar packed into their joints has largely broken down with age, leaving gaps at every collar.

Soil that won't sit still

Reactive clay takes up water in a wet season and gives it back in a dry one. Each cycle nudges old pipe lengths a little further off true, and the ledge left inside the joint is where toilet paper and wipes collect.

Roots after dry weather

Gums in back yards and trees along the streets go looking for moisture when it's dry, and hairline cracks in the clay are an easy way in. The root mass grows into a net that holds back whatever comes down the pipe.

PVC in the newer houses

Brick-veneer infill runs plastic pipe, which roots find harder to breach, so grease, wipes and foreign objects are the things to rule out first there.

The Visit From Ring to Re-check

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3475 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  3. 03

    The clear and the proof

The jetter or eel works the blockage free, then the camera is run end to end to show water flowing clean.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

What Does a Drain Clear Cost?

  • The pipe you have Old clay needs a gentler nozzle and slower passes than PVC, which adds time
  • How we get in An existing inspection opening is quick; a line with no access point may need one made
  • The footage A clean clear is priced as it stands, and a cracked length needing relining is quoted separately before it goes ahead
  • Out-of-hours calls A night or weekend clear costs more, and that's given with the booking

When We're Not the Right Call

Past your boundary the sewer main belongs to Hunter Water. If the footage puts the blockage in their pipe, you get their faults number and the footage to show them. Everything from your inspection point back to the fixtures is our work.

What Aberdare Homes Ask About Their Drains

Can you clear a drain in an older Aberdare cottage without digging up the yard?

Yes, where there's an inspection opening to work from. The jetter or eel goes in through it, and the camera then checks whether the clay is sound. If a length is cracked but still in line, a liner can be cured inside it, and the garden above isn't touched.

Why do drains on the older streets here keep blocking again?

Clearing removes the blockage, not the reason for it. Under the original streets the clay joints have opened up and the ground shifts them further each season, so roots and waste keep catching at the same place. Repairing or relining that length is what stops the repeat visits.

Is a blocked stormwater drain treated differently to a blocked sewer?

Yes. Sewer lines carry waste from the toilet, kitchen and bathroom, so they're cleared and then filmed for damage. Stormwater lines take roof and yard runoff, and on this rising ground the older ones overload in a storm burst, which the stormwater page on this site explains.

Is the camera check included when you clear a drain?

Yes. We film the pipe ahead of the clear to find what's causing it, and again afterwards so the clean run is on screen for you. If the footage shows damage that needs more than a clear, that repair is priced separately and only goes ahead once you agree.
