What This Page Covers

Everything hot water sits here: fixing a unit, replacing it, and choosing between electric, gas and solar. Heat pumps have their own page at heat pump hot water, and a tank pouring water across the floor right now is an emergency plumber job first. For the rest of what we do, see Aberdare Plumbing Co.

How Do You Know a Cylinder Is Finished?

Some faults are obvious and some build slowly. Watch for:

  • A puddle under the tank, or a relief valve that keeps running and won't stop
  • Water that never gets properly hot, whatever the thermostat says
  • Hot water that runs out partway through a single shower
  • Rust stains running down the jacket of an outdoor unit

A worn anode or a sticking valve can be replaced. Once rust has eaten a pinhole through the tank wall it can't be patched, and it needs replacing.

Should You Repair or Replace?

Start with the unit's age. Repair money spent on a tank in its final years only postpones the replacement.

  • Element, thermostat or valve gone on a unit with plenty of life left in the tank: repair
  • Water leaking from the cylinder itself, at any age: replace
  • An old unit coming up for its second repair inside a year: replace it before a cold morning does the deciding

If it's a replacement, the swap gets its own quote, a temporary tank keeps the house running, and the old unit leaves with us.

Electric Hot Water

Electric storage units serve homes without a gas connection and cost the least to buy, though they cost more to run over the years. Instant electric models warm water only as it flows and suit a small household. Either way, the pipe feeding the unit gets looked at, because a galvanised service rusted narrow will starve a new cylinder.

Gas Hot Water

Homes already connected to gas can take a gas storage unit or a continuous-flow heater that lights up the moment hot water is drawn. Older steel gas pipe may be corroded inside, with fittings well past their best, so it's pressure-tested before a new unit is connected, and our licensed gas fitters handle that side of the job.

Solar Hot Water

Solar collectors need a roof with good northern exposure and little shade, and a booster covers the cloudy stretches. Area-level figures count 1,394 solar hot water installs across the district, alongside 1,299 heat pump installs, so both systems are familiar here.

Frost, Old Tanks and Cottage Access

Frost finds the weak cylinder

Area-level records average 6.4 frost days a year. A storage cylinder left standing outside a weatherboard cottage for decades thins with corrosion each winter, and a clear, freezing dawn is when a worn one splits.

One bathroom, no waiting

In an older home with a single bathroom, a split tank stops showers for everyone, so the temporary tank comes out that day while the new unit is sorted.

Easier to reach

A unit in an outside enclosure on an older house is quicker to remove than one boxed into a cupboard in a newer build, which keeps labour down.

What Drives a Hot Water Price?

  • The unit The new system is the largest line on the quote, and a change from electric to gas or heat pump adds connection work
  • The supply line A narrowed galvanised service may need a short run of new copper or PEX to feed the cylinder properly
  • Where it sits An outdoor enclosure is quicker to work in than a tight laundry cupboard
  • Nights and weekends A hot water callout outside business hours costs more, and you get that amount up front

What Customers Say

They gave us a prompt quote with different options and helped us with a temporary hot water tank while the new system arrived and was installed.

When We're Not the Right Call

When the heater is fine and the fault is a supply that keeps tripping, a licensed electrician needs to find that fault. Water leaking from a pipe in the wall rather than from the tank is a job for leak detection.

Hot Water Questions From Aberdare Homes

Can we still get hot water while our system waits on parts?

Yes. When the old unit can't be fixed on the day, a temporary hot water tank can be connected so the household has showers while the new one is organised. It's listed on the quote before you say yes.

Is solar hot water a sensible choice in Aberdare?

It can work well, since the inland Hunter gets hot, clear summers. Whether it suits your house comes down to which way the roof faces, shade from nearby trees, and how much hot water gets used through the day. Those are checked when the quote is drawn up.

Our shower pressure dies whenever the tank refills. Is that the hot water system?

Not always. Many pre-1940 cottages here are still fed through galvanised pipe from when they were built, which rusts closed from inside and chokes flow to every outlet, the cylinder included. The supply pipe gets checked before a quote, because a new tank on a narrowed service won't fix the pressure.

What happens if the fault turns out to be electrical?

Replacing a failed heating element or thermostat inside an electric unit is plumbing work and gets replaced. If the fault is in the wiring or the circuit supplying the unit, an electrician takes over that part, and you'll know which it is before anything is booked.
